"A teacher is worth more than Neymar"

What factors have contributed to the recent protests in Brasil? Are the people justified?  What is the overall pulse of the nation?

Let's Discuss!!

    1. This is very well done and informative. I would like to hear from other Brazilians
on what the pulse of your nation is and why it has to decided to shift and express it's national pride. Why did Brazil wake up?

  2. Williams, thank you for your response! I am very interested in the pulse of Brazil right now...Americans can learn from Brazil and their strength...Greece basically went bankrupt because of the 2004 Olympics, which raises the question: Are these huge events beneficial or detrimental to the hosting countries? Check out this pdf from Drexel University..

  3. About the 'brazilian awakening' I´d say that we´ve been exploited by our politicians since this country was discovered. Unlike the U.S and Australia for instance, the model of colonization established in Brazil was one of exploiting its natural resources and its work force in benefit of the kingdom of Portugal. I have the feeling that when the English first arrived in the U.S or in Australia they looked at those nations as their new home and they sought to develop it. In Brazil that did not happen. Years after years we have seen taxes increase, corruption go rampant and nothing ever be done about it. We were seen as a 'party nation' where conflicts and social unrest had no place. Well, it turns out that the amount of public money spent to host the confederations cup and the world cup is unacceptable. Our health care is in tatters, our education in bad shape, safety is nearly non-existant. So how come they don´t invest in those areas but splash out on football stadiums and venues for the sporting events? They´ve spent twice as much as Germany when the world cup was held there! That was the last straw. Suddenly the country realised the fool it has been made out of by its rullers.
Now, part of the media has tried to hide the true reason for protesting. There´s a national television network that owns the country´s most powerful means of communication and it has been biased, taking the politician´s side. It actually make a point of focusing on the rioters, the looting which is done by a minority, they blow it out of proportion making it look like the protests are all about vandalism. I´ve noticed that a number of internation news channels have actually shown the real meaning of it. But facebook, twitter have played an important role and as 95% of the country uses these social networking sites news spreads quickly and you can get updates all the time. As for magazines and newspapers, some are biased some are not.
